Articulate 360 Alternative: SCORMBuilder.ai for $29/month

Articulate 360 is the premium end of eLearning authoring: Storyline 360, Rise 360, a nine-million-asset content library and Review 360, at $1,449 to $1,749 per user per year, billed annually. SCORMBuilder.ai is a browser-based authoring tool at $29 a month — about $348 a year, billed monthly.

That is roughly a quarter of the cost. This page is an honest comparison, including the work Articulate does better.

Articulate pricing verified from its public pricing page and Capterra in August 2026 and may change. Articulate offers a 30-day trial; SCORMBuilder offers a 14-day trial.

The four real differences

1. Annual commitment versus monthly

Articulate 360 has no monthly option — every plan is an annual commitment per named user. That is a frequent complaint from freelancers and small teams whose course work is seasonal: you pay for the quiet months too. SCORMBuilder is $29 a month and you can stop when a project ends.

2. Storyline still needs Windows

Storyline 360 is a Windows desktop application with no native macOS build. Mac users run it through Parallels, VMware or Boot Camp and buy a Windows licence to do so. Rise 360 is browser-based, so the constraint only bites when you need Storyline — but you cannot buy the two separately. SCORMBuilder runs in the browser on any operating system.

3. Where feedback lands

Both tools let stakeholders review a course from a link. A common criticism of Review 360 is that comments accumulate in one list, so an author has to work out which part of the course each note refers to. SCORMBuilder anchors every comment to the block it was left on, and clicking it in the editor jumps straight there.

4. Where the AI starts

Articulate's AI Assistant, on its higher tiers, helps while you build — generating blocks, rewriting text, making images. SCORMBuilder starts one step earlier: describe a topic or upload a document and it drafts the whole course, which you then edit. It also translates a finished course into 35+ languages in one click, with full right-to-left layout for Arabic and Hebrew.

When Articulate 360 is worth the money

Articulate is the market leader for good reasons, and price alone is a poor argument. Stay with it if:

Nothing in this category replaces Storyline's custom logic. If that is the work you do, Articulate is the right tool.

When SCORMBuilder is the better buy

What you keep when you switch

Your LMS only sees the published package, and the standards are identical on both sides: SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI and cmi5. Courses built in SCORMBuilder upload to Moodle, TalentLMS, Docebo, Cornerstone, Blackboard and Canvas exactly as an Articulate package would, and report scores and completion the same way. Courses you already published from Storyline or Rise keep working — a published SCORM package is self-contained and does not depend on the tool that made it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Articulate 360 alternative?

It depends on the work. If you build custom interactions with triggers and variables in Storyline, nothing replaces it. If you build structured, content-led courses and want browser-based authoring, AI-generated first drafts and monthly billing, SCORMBuilder.ai is a direct alternative at $29 a month versus $1,449 to $1,749 per user per year.

How much does Articulate 360 cost in 2026?

Articulate 360 is billed annually per named user. As of August 2026 its published pricing is $1,199 for Personal Standard, $1,449 for AI Personal and $1,749 for AI Teams, per user per year. There is no monthly billing option. Prices change, so check Articulate's pricing page for current figures.

Is there an Articulate alternative that works on a Mac?

Yes. Storyline 360 is Windows-only, so Mac users run it through Parallels, VMware or Boot Camp with a Windows licence. SCORMBuilder.ai runs entirely in the browser, so it works natively on macOS, Windows, Linux and Chromebooks with nothing to install.

Can I buy Storyline or Rise on their own?

Storyline 360 and Rise 360 are sold together as part of an Articulate 360 subscription rather than as separate purchases, so you pay for the suite even if you only use one tool. That is one reason teams who only build content-led courses look for a lighter alternative.

Will my existing Articulate courses stop working if I switch?

No. A published SCORM, xAPI or cmi5 package is self-contained and keeps running in your LMS regardless of which tool built it or whether that subscription is still active. New courses are built in SCORMBuilder, so you can move across gradually.
